The Bishop JV Broncos traveled to Rosamond Tuesday afternoon to take on the Roadrunners. The Broncos were hungry for a rematch, as Rosamond is the only team to beat Bishop this season. The 1st quarter saw the two teams trading baskets with Bishop taking the quarter 9-8. Bishop used tough defense to pull away some in the 2nd quarter taking a halftime lead 20-14. Bishop came out in the 3rd and clamped down on defense winning the quarter 13-2, taking a commanding lead into the 4th. With an even 4th Bishop came out on top 42-26. This was the best defense game Bishop has play this season. Rosamond was undefeated in league thus far and it is quite an accomplishment to hold them to 26 points. Leading the way for the Broncos was Dom Dondero with 13 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals. Will Kemp added 8 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists. Devaun Mitchell had 8 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists. Jekobe Dondero had 8 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal. Heath Fuller had 3 point...

Dave McCoy Tribute Close to Fruition Family, Community Leaders Grateful to Senator Alvarado-Gil A grassroots effort to have a portion of U.S. 395 named after late Mammoth Mountain Ski Area founder Dave McCoy is closer to becoming a reality. Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 102 on January 18, to designate U.S. 395 from the junction with the Mammoth Lakes turnoff to Convict Lake Road as the “Dave McCoy Memorial Highway.” The stretch of highway was one of two areas proposed by proponents, with the other starting outside of Bishop and ending at Mill Creek Road. The tribute was spearheaded by Bishop resident Randy Short and shepherded through the legislative process with the assistance and support of Inyo County Supervisor Jeff Griffiths, the California State Association of Counties (where Griffiths serves as 1st Vice President), and Senator Alvarado-Gil’s staff. The Boards of Supervisors from Inyo and Mono counties approved their own resolutions in...

Concerned Citizen: I recently had a conversation with the wonderful lady who handles my taxes at AARP, and our discussion took an unexpected turn towards the challenges many are facing with Vons' recent smartphone requirement. It seems like I'm not alone in feeling frustrated about this, and many people in our community share similar concerns. The need for a smartphone to access certain deals and promotions at Vons has raised eyebrows, particularly among those who may not own a smartphone or choose not to use one. It's an issue that affects a significant portion of our community, and it's time for us to collectively express our thoughts on the matter. I spoke with my tax advisor about the situation, and she completely agreed about the unfairness of the smartphone requirement. Interestingly, she mentioned that several people she knows feel the same way, emphasizing the widespread concern this issue has sparked. To make our voices heard and encourage change, I propose we ...

Director’s Note I am so pleased to be writing my first annual report note as the new Inyo County Water Director. I came to the Water Department in December 2022 as Deputy Director to learn from and be guided by Director Aaron Steinwand as he tran- sitioned into retirement. While I have a 20-year background in studying water resources in the Eastern Sierra, learning the intricacies of the Long Term Water Agreement and its myriad applications has been a daunting020 challenge. The 50- year history of the struggle between Inyo and LA is precedent-setting in the world of Western water. The first few months in this new position have been a time of great learning for me. Along with getting to know the peo- ple, the workflow, and the documents of the Water Department, the wettest winter in California’s recorded history start- ed a mere few weeks after I began work at the County. Several people commented to me that 2023 would be an “easy” year because of the plentiful water, and while it is goo...

January 28, 2024   Inyo District 2 Supervisorial Candidates  Face Off   Inyo 350 kicked off the 2024 election season last Thursday with a County Supervisorial forum featuring District 2 candidates, held at the United Methodist Church. The following is a somewhat condensed report on the Q&A, held before a packed hall.   First, a brief opening statement from sitting Supervisor Jeff Griffiths and challenger Laura Smith.  Smith has lived in Bishop for most of her life, working first as a nurse then as a teacher. Her community involvement includes First 5 and Bishop schools. Smith served on the Bishop City Counci for 12 years. She promised to take what she has learned to the Board of Supervisors and feels there needs to be more teamwork between Bishop and Inyo County.  Griffiths is a 25-year Bishop resident and “plans to stay here forever.” He was also on First 5, served as a foster parent, was a Bishop councilmember for two terms and is running for his fourth term on the Inyo County Bo...

Digital Discrimination: Seniors Speak Out Against Unfair Coupon Practices at Vons

Image
Bishop, a quaint town where familiarity reigns, has been home to one resident for over four decades. This seasoned citizen, a loyal customer of Vons, recently found herself in the midst of a digital dilemma that has left many seniors feeling left out. For years, Vons has been a reliable shopping destination for this long-time resident. However, a recent shift in the store's coupon strategy has left her, and others like her, feeling marginalized. The advent of digital coupons, accessible only through smartphones, has created a divide among shoppers. As a proud non-digital user, the senior citizen in question has missed out on money-saving opportunities offered exclusively to those embracing the digital age. During a stroll through Vons, she took the initiative to speak with fellow seniors about their experiences with the new coupon system. Surprisingly, none of the seniors she approached were partaking in the digital coupon trend, and all echoed a similar sentiment – they felt exclu...
