Area Forecast Discussion
Owens Valley / Mammoth Lakes / Mono County / Death Valley
Dennis Mattinson / Sierra Atmospheric Forecaster Synopsis - Fri Aug 30 2024 Little change in the forecast thru the Holiday weekend, with high temps running just about normal for late August / early September. In addition a baggy trough moving onto the CA coast late weekend, will bring some SW breezes and allow some moisture to filter into the area. But as high pressure settles firmly over our Forecast Area, the potential for any thunderstorms looks quite minimal (10%). Owens Valley / Mammoth Lakes / Mono County / Death Valley
Dennis Mattinson / Sierra Atmospheric Forecaster Synopsis - Wed Aug 28 2024 Overall a dry and benign weather pattern is in store for us this week. Highs this week in Bishop will be in the mid 90s and lows in the low 50s. And that is just about average for late August. Over the upcoming Holiday weekend, an offshore low will slowly approach the coast and bring just enough energy to muster an isolated shower or two over the Crest of Mono County on Sunday. National Preparedness Month Highlights Need for Blood Donors
Bishop and Mammoth Lakes Blood Drives Announced
MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif (August 26, 2024) — It’s the blood already donated that helps save lives when a disaster strikes. During National Preparedness Month in September, Vitalant urges all eligible donors to give blood and help ensure the country’s blood supply is strong to meet the needs of patients. Donors of all blood types are vital to helping patients, especially the most-transfused type O. In an emergency, O-negative is what doctors reach for when there’s no time to determine a patient’s blood type, and O-positive is the next best alternative. As a special thanks to donors who answer the call, those who give will automatically be entered into the Pumpkin Spice Giveaway and have a chance to win one of five $5,000 prepaid gift cards of their choice. Scott German was one of the victims of the Willow Street Fire, and he was a huge Superman fan. As we were walking up the stairs at Sierra Wave, the group noticed my Superman tattoo and mentioned that Scott had shared the same passion, with a vast collection of Superman memorabilia that was tragically lost in the fire.
What Scott didn’t know is that a good friend of mine was the very first person to portray Clark Kent on the big screen back in 1948. When we reached my office, I pulled out my phone and called Mason Alan Dinehart III. We had a wonderful conversation, and at the end of it, I asked Mason if he would help Scott restart his Superman collection by signing a postcard-sized reproduction of the original 1948 Superman poster. Mason, being the great guy that he is, mailed it that very day. He also included a photo of himself playing Bat Masterson in The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp. https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/digital-originals/from-wild-west-actor-to-olympic-pin-colle...

Hand Car Rides This Saturday at Laws!
Have you ever wanted to ride a hand car?
Are you at least 4 foot tall?
Do you have $5.00?
If you’ve answered YES to these questions, come on over and ride the rails.
We are offering hand car rides this Saturday, August 24th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Hand cars came to the railroad industry in the 1860s, allowing workers to maintain track more efficiently. Initially, most railroads designed and built their own hand cars, but by the 1880s, hand cars became available commercially. This is a pilot program, if it proves popular, we can add more dates so come on out, ride the rails, and support the museum. Join our train restoration shop docents afterwards to learn more about our trains, their history, and the use of the telegraph in early railroad days. Save time to visit the Mining display w...

All law enforcement help spread the tarp just in time for Bishop Fire Department to arrive. Bishop Fire discharged their hose in the trash can to minimize the water to the floor. Dehydrated hiker rescued from Panamint Butte
DEATH VALLEY, Calif. – A Death Valley National Park resort employee was rescued on August 13 after becoming severely dehydrated while hiking Panamint Butte. The man started hiking at 4 am from Panamint Springs Resort. He crossed Panamint Valley, then climbed Panamint Butte’s west face. He had hiked more than 8 ½ miles and gained 4,600 feet in elevation. He got to the summit around noon. Then it was time to head back. He consulted a topographic map and decided to descend through a canyon. The man came to a rappel anchor at the top of a dryfall. Not having ropes and technical gear, he climbed back up the mountain and descended the route he had climbed that morning. He ran out of water around 4:30 pm. Heat and dehydration caught up with him. He reports that he lost consciousness and slid down a scree slope. After an unknown period of time, he woke up bruised and realized it was time to call for a rescue. He used the SOS function on...

Salt Creek Boardwalk environmental review complete DEATH VALLEY, Calif. – The National Park Service (NPS) completed the environmental review of plans to replace Salt Creek Boardwalk, which was destroyed by a flash flood two years ago. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will put the project out to bid. All public access to the site will be closed during construction, which is planned for fall 2024 through spring 2025. For decades, people enjoyed viewing Salt Creek pupfish (Cyprinodon salinus salinus) from the boardwalk, one of the park’s few wheelchair-accessible trails. The boardwalk prevented people from trampling the creek, which is this fish’s only habitat. A flash flood in August 2022 destroyed the boardwalk and vault toilet. The parking lot and road were further damaged during the remnants of Hurricane Hilary in 2023.
The Salt Creek Boardwalk project will replace the raised boardwalk, reconstruct the road and parking area, and install a new restroom at a reconfigured trai...
