Halloween is here — and it falls on a Friday this year, which means celebrations may last well into the night. While excitement fills the air, please take extra time to ensure everyone stays safe. For parents, hold your children’s hands when crossing streets and stay alert for drivers who may not be paying attention. For those heading to Halloween parties, plan ahead — have a designated driver or call someone for a ride. Even one drink is too many when it comes to getting behind the wheel. Protect our children and one another. I still remember a “don’t drink and drive” video I saw back in high school — the story of a father who stayed at the bar too long. He rushed home, asked where his son was, and his wife said, “He was standing in the driveway waiting for you.” That story, tragically, wasn’t fiction and I know you know how it ended. Please, make safe choices tonight. One moment of care can save a lifetime of regret. By: DJ BPaw aka Jason Brown https://sierrawave.net/halloween-...

Rep. Kiley Sponsors Legislation to Ensure Food Assistance Continues for Millions During Shutdown WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Kevin Kiley (R-CA) announced that he is co-sponsoring the Keep SNAP Funded Act of 2025, legislation designed to ensure that families relying on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) continue receiving their benefits during the ongoing government shutdown. The government shutdown is threatening food security for millions of Americans as they rely on SNAP for a stable food source. The Keep SNAP Funded Act of 2025 guarantees that SNAP recipients will continue to receive their benefits throughout the duration of the shutdown. The bill also provides retroactive payments for any missed benefits on or after September 30, 2025. “No person or family in America should go hungry because of the government shutdown,” Rep. Kiley said. “The simplest solution is for the government to be reopened immediately, but short of that, we must pass legislation that wi...

Inyo County Judge Susanne Rizo Publicly Admonished by State Commission By Tyler Beadle INDEPENDENCE, CA— On October 29, 2025, the California Commission on Judicial Performance issued a public admonishment against Inyo County Superior Court Judge Susanne M. Rizo today in a 13-page decision. Rizo has served on the bench since 2021. The commission found Rizo filed two State Bar complaints on July 5, 2024, against Court Executive Officer Pamela Foster and Court Operations Manager Lindsay Eropkin. She accused them of the unauthorized practice of law for questioning her directives on ICWA notice procedures in probate guardianship cases and on handling traffic dismissals. Rizo also claimed Presiding Judge Stephen Place, the only other judge in Inyo County, was aiding and abetting the alleged misconduct. She told the State Bar she hoped the individuals would be fully prosecuted. The State Bar dismissed both complaints on August 28, 2024, finding no evidence of wrongdoing. The commissi...

OCTOBER 28, 2025, BISHOP, CA FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Inyo County Echoes Statewide Warning on Kratom and 7-OH Products Inyo County Health & Human Services-Public Health and Environmental Health are alerting the community to recent warnings from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) about the serious health risks associated with products containing Kratom and 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH). These substances are illegal to sell or manufacture in California and have been linked to addiction, severe illness, and death. Since April 2025, several fatal overdoses in Los Angeles County have been connected to 7-OH, prompting CDPH to take enforcement action to remove these products from retail stores and online marketplaces statewide. Despite these efforts, Kratom and 7-OH items continue to surface in some gas stations, smoke shops, and online retailers. Kratom and 7-OH are derived from the kratom plant and act as potent opioids. Neither substance is approved for use as a dietary s...

By Tyler Beadle The Bishop City Council meeting on October 27, 2025, began at 6:01 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at 377 W. Line St. and extended past 8:15 p.m., addressing a full agenda that culminated in Item 17.B: the structural integrity and future of the Chamber of Commerce A-frame building at 690 N. Main St. City Administrator Pamela Foster presented the Wood Rodgers engineering report by Eric Toschi, P.E., which rated the 55-year-old structure in "POOR" condition. Key findings included overstressed second-floor joists, unclear structural connections, and foundation posts in the southern addition undermined by creek erosion. The report estimated repair costs at $200,000 to $2 million and demolition at around $90,000. Foster stated that additional invasive inspections are required for detailed assessments. Public comment on the A-frame was extensive. Leslie emphasized the site's prime location for buses and RVs. Joyce, a visitors center host, highlighted its...
