Forest Service Features - Late May 2024 Edition Forest Service Features
Late May - 2024 YCC participants set up small mammal footprint tunnels within the trees of Arz Ehmej Conservation Park, the location of their six-month residential program. Each tunnel contains sticky tape, charcoal, and white contact paper for collecting prints. (Photo courtesy of Lebanon Reforestation Initiative) Restoring Lebanon's Forests
In the hills north of Beirut, Lebanon, a group of young citizen scientists collects the footprints of small mammals using contact paper and charcoal. They are hoping they might find signs of forest dormice, a fluffy-tailed, squirrel-like animal that thrives in dense forests. But forest dormice are no longer common in Lebanon, where rapid urbanization, unsustainable forestry practices, and, increasingly, wildfire have reduced Lebanon’s forest cover to just six percent, leaving a highly urbanized population vulnerable to flooding, compromised ground water and polluted ai...

Forecast Discussion - Fri May 31 2024 Flat ridging remains in place today thru the weekend, with a couple of weak waves passing overhead Saturday and another Monday. All this will do is pause our warming trend temporarily. But after Monday high pressure shifts into the Western States. So plan on some significant early June heat, with temps some 10+ degress above normal by Wednesday. How warm will it be Wednesday in Bishop, 100°, in Mammoth lakes near 80° and Death Valley 118°. I'll have more temperature updates in Monday's forecast. Until then, have a "Great Go Do It' weekend"...DMATT Your Temperatures Today:. Bishop: 93 / 52

Forecast Discussion - Thu May 30 2024 The synoptic regime during the latter half of the week, will feature an Eastern Pacific ridge. As such great weather and warming temperatures thru Friday. By Friday and the weekend, temps look to run in the low / mid 90s in the Owens Valley and about 70° for Mammoth. Right now it looks like that high pressure ridge could amplify further across much of the Western states mid next week. Stay tuned to Friday's forecast for updates...DMATT Your Temperatures Today:

Sierra Wave Media / KSRW-FM 92.5 Forecast Discussion - Wed May 29 2024 A weak transient trough will pass over the Western CONUS today, with little effect, save for some nuisance breeziness in our area. Little change in our temperatures on Thursday. By Friday and the weekend we have a slight uptick in temperatures, as a building ridge begins to make its presence felt. So the mid 90s looks likely Friday into the weekend in Bishop. The question remains, just how high will temperatures climb next week, with that building ridge?...DMATT Your temperatures Today: Bishop: 90 / 51

Sierra Wave Media / KSRW-FM 92.5 Area Forecast Discussion - Mon May 27 2024 Today a weak shortwave crosses the Sierra Crest / Western Great Basin and brings just enough moisture to support isolated, high based convection over Mammoth and the Crest. Other than that, mostly uneventful weather for our Forecast Area this week. The only concern is a PACNW low pressure system Tuesday and just how far South it will drop. Most likely scenario, we get breezy weather Tuesday, with temps hovering in the low 90s in Bishop and about 70° in Mammoth midweek onward...DMATT Your Temperatures Today: Bishop: 89 / 51

Forecast Discussion - Thu May 23 2024 Looks like our region will stay mostly dry today and tomorrow, with the only exception, a low end chance (10 - 15%) of an isolated t-storm over Mammoth and the Sierra Crest Friday. Cooler temps today and Friday as well, brought to you by the Western edge of a cold front sweeping thru the area. Now the upcoming Holiday weekend looks high and dry with seasonal temperatures. This will be followed by a building ridge of high pressure across the Western states Monday into early next week. More updates in Friday's Forecast...DMATT Your Temperatures Today: Bishop: 82 / 46

Appeals Court Strikes Down Forest Service Approval of Gold Drilling
in California’s Eastern Sierra Nevada Project Threatened Imperiled Wildlife, Endangered Fish SAN FRANCISCO— A federal appeals court issued its opinion reversing the decision of a lower court that would have allowed exploratory drilling east of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains. The Court found the Forest Service violated the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) when it relied on two categorical exclusions for a single project to avoid the required environmental reviews. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT: May 20, 2024, Rob Miller, OVMAP Program Supervisor (760)-873-7853 Mosquito Awareness – Higher Mosquito Populations Expected to Rise Recent high-water flows on the Owens River out of Pleasant Valley reservoir have the potential to create a higher abundance of mosquitoes. We can expect to see larger numbers of adult mosquitoes in the Bishop and Big Pine areas over the next few weeks. These mosquitoes are called the Aedes melanimon. They are a floodwater species which can become a significant pest, biting day and night. They lay their eggs in the mud along old riverbanks and oxbows. Once the eggs dry out and become conditioned, they can lie dormant in the soil for many years. When the Owens River exceeds over 400 cfs, it spills over into those old river channels and oxbows where these eggs have been lying dormant. When the temperatures a...
