Bishop Lions had an informational program at their late September board meeting which saw Lions learning more about their ongoing vision screening program, using special equipment which scans an individual's eyes and prints out a report with findings to be taken to the individual's optometrist.  Included in that recent program was an explanation of how  a lensometer works in the hands of a trained specialist.  The lensometer can readily identify the prescription "ground" into each lens of a set of eyeglasses. The trained technician then scribes the identified prescription on each lens and processes the glasses for distribution to Lions International community outlets, usually a local Lions Club, where the glasses are assigned to already identified needy individuals with that particular prescription measured independently in advance. Shown above (r) is the smiling presenter, Lion District 4-L1 Past District Governor Dr. Fredy (sic) Perez, who was invited by Past Presid...

NIHD Healthy Lifestyle Talk: Navigating the Stages of Breast Cancer Northern Inyo Healthcare District will host a Healthy Lifestyle Talk, Navigating the Stages of Breast Cancer: From Diagnosis to Treatment and Beyond, on Tuesday, October 1, at 5:30 p.m. The event will feature Dr. Cheryl Olson, NIHD’s breast surgeon, and Dr. Eva Wasef, NIHD’s pathologist. This talk brings together two of NIHD’s valued experts to discuss the critical importance of how to best move forward when diagnosed with any stage of breast cancer. Breast cancer affects one in eight women during their lifetime. According to the American Cancer Society, detecting breast cancer early, while it remains in its localized stage, can raise the five-year relative survival rate to 99 percent. However, if cancer spreads before detection, the survival rate falls to 29 percent. Dr. Olson, a board-certified general surgeon with expertise in breast surgery, robotic surgery, and laparoscopic techniques, provides highly speciali...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 25, 2024 FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT: Nate Reade, Inyo-Mono Agricultural Commissioner (760) 873-7860 CONSUMERS SHOULD BE ON THE ALERT WHEN BUYING FIREWOOD Fall is here, and with winter just around the corner consumers should protect themselves from paying too much for improperly measured firewood. A cord is the only legal unit of measure for bulk firewood sales in California, and it is important for buyers to know exactly how much wood is in a cord. A cord is equal to 128 cubic feet of COMPACTLY stacked wood, typically measuring 4’x4’x8’. To determine the cubic feet, multiply length x width x height. Measurements taken in inches can be converted to cubic feet by dividing by 1728. For all sales of non-packaged wood, California regulations require the seller to furnish the buyer with a bill of sale, stating the amount of wood purchased, total selling price, the seller’s name and address, and the date of sale or delivery. When buying wood over th...

Olancha Cartago Fire Department Former Chief Chelsea Benbrook made this statement at the Olancha Community Services Regular Board Meeting, September 19, 2024. Failing EMS systems is a problem nationwide. Our Volunteer EMS collapse has been on the horizon and after the fall of Symon‘s ambulance in Bishop, I knew we were entering into an opportunity phase in Olancha. We are vulnerable here on the outskirts of the county but fortunate to lie on the 395 corridor and also unfortunate because of the added geography to cover for our small and diminishing population. 80% of our total call volume is helping tourists and traffic collisions along 395. The brave people who respond to these scenes are paid a $20 flat rate per call, so it’s safe to say the incentive isn’t salary-related. People are vulnerable. Vulnerable to motorists driving high speeds, vulnerable to blood-borne pathogens, vulnerable to the effects of PTSD. No leader should lose sight of the potential liability people enter into wh...

Last week Olancha-Cartago Fire Department temporarily suspended emergency medical services. Olancha Cartago Fire Department said that they could not provide emergency services. This is expected to be temporary. Lone Pine Fire Protection District EMS and Ridgecrest EMS expanded their operating areas to include Olancha Cartago as an interim measure. Inyo County Emergency Medical Services are sparse and fragile due to the current model, large service areas, limited personnel, inadequate call volume, and reimbursement constraints. Inyo County Medical Services depend upon volunteers; however, in recent years, volunteer numbers declined significantly. Recent shortages of qualified personnel created this temporary, unsustainable strain on Olancha-Cartago Fire Department EMS coverage.
