INYO / MONO COUNTY — The California Department of Motor Vehicles has ordered an estimated 11,000 motorists across the state to retake their written knowledge tests immediately, or face losing their driving privileges entirely.

The sweeping mandate targets a specific group: any driver who successfully passed their written exam between **July 2025 and April 2026**.

According to officials, the DMV's internal monitoring systems flagged "testing anomalies" and irregularities within that specific window. While the agency has strictly declined to release details on what exactly triggered the flags—leaving drivers in the dark about whether the issue stems from cheating or data errors—they did confirm the problem was not caused by an internal technical glitch or an AI malfunction.

If you are affected, you should look for an official, physical notice in your mailbox.

What Affected Drivers Need to Do:

1. Check the Date on Your Letter

30-Day Window Starts Immediately

You have exactly 30 days from the date printed on your physical DMV notice to schedule, take, and pass the new written exam.

2. Scan the QR Code to Book an Appointment

No Walk-ins Allowed

The DMV is not accepting drop-ins for these retests. You must use your phone to scan the QR code located directly on your warning letter to book an in-person appointment online.

3. Gather Your Required Documents

Bring Physical Proof

When heading to your local DMV branch, you are required to physically bring the DMV warning letter, along with your current driver's license card, temporary license, or instruction permit.

The Penalty: If you fail to take the exam within the 30-day window, or if you fail the retest, the DMV warns your driver’s license will be officially canceled, rendering it invalid for driving and identification.
