Inyo National Forest wild horse gather closure area, July 7-17
(Lee Vining, CA, July 2, 2026) – The USDA Forest Service will begin the Montgomery Pass Wild Horse Territory Gather operation to gather and remove 450 wild horses located outside the Montgomery Pass Wild Horse Territory.
Effective July 7 – July 17, 2026, going into or being within the Wild Horse Gather Closure Area (Forest Order No. 05-04-51-26-28) is prohibited within the Inyo National Forest. The purpose of this closure is to protect public health and safety while supporting safe and efficient wild horse gather operations to ensure humane care and treatment of all animals captured. Only essential gather personnel and permitted personnel will be allowed at trap and holding sites during operations. We ask the public to not interfere with the operation.
This action is associated with the BLM Closure supporting the removal of excess wild horses outside of the Montgomery Pass Wild Horse Territory.
