Rachel Mae Carter Lober was born December 26, 1926 in Tarzana California. Her parents had a small farm in the San Fernando Valley, where they grew peaches. Her formative years were spent in the Great
Depression and World War II. She got her B.A. degree at the University of California Santa Barbara, where she met and married Robert Lober. She was an elementary school teacher for five years before she took time off to raise her two children. She returned to teaching in 1964 and retired in 1987. During that time she became a Miller-Unruh reading specialist for the Claremont Unified School District. She also got her Masters degree in Education from Northern Arizona University. One of the fun things the Lobers did was to travel the world. They visited Europe, Russia, Egypt, South America, Australia and New Zealand plus travelling all over North America.
When Robert retired from teaching in 1992 they moved to the Owen Valley where their son built them a custom home in Bishop. They continued to travel, but picked up some new hobbies like fiber spinning and weaving. They also started to attending the luncheon at the Bishop Senior Center and they volunteered for many years. Rachel was the volunteer secretary for the Senior Center for 24 years. She helped established the popular Christmas wrap program in December. She also helped get various monetary grants that helped the Senior Center.
She died peacefully on July 4 2026 at the Bishop Care Center.
She is survived by her daughter Robin of Bishop and her son Richard also of Bishop. Daughter-in-law Gale and various nieces and nephews.
