We hear opinions all the time about whether news is good or bad, real, or fake, right, or wrong, left or right. In a recent survey, half of Americans believe they are being deliberately deceived by the news, although most cannot back it up with facts, largely because they cannot decide what a fact is. “Facts” are based more on what they “feel” is true, and not facts coming from reliable, credible, authoritative sources. The comedian-satirist Steve Colbert coined the word “Truthiness” years ago to describe that feeling, belief or assertion that a particular statement is true based on the intuition or perceptions of some individual or individuals, rather than evidence, logic, intellectual examination, or facts. Truthiness is an Appeal to Emotion, an internal logical fallacy, that is found on all news websites that promote “causes”—whether left, right or center—that posits ignorant assertions of lies, deliberate duplicity, or propaganda used to sway opinions. We also hear the term “confir...

Exclusive Interview with Investigator on the homicide case of Dorothy McQueen Inyo County Sheriff Stephanie Rennie has announced the arrest of a suspect in the 2023 murder of Dorothy Erin McQueen of Independence. Steven James Allen, 45, also of Independence, was taken into custody at about 3:22 p.m. today, Tuesday, February 27 by members of the Inyo County Sheriff’s and District Attorney’s offices. RECENT WARM WEATHER AWAKENS MOSQUITOES FROM WINTER SLUMBER IN THE OWENS VALLEY
The Owens Valley Mosquito Abatement Program has received an increase in reports from residents seeing mosquitoes this past February due to the unseasonably warm weather we have been experiencing. The mosquitoes are probably of the Anopheles species.
“These mosquitoes are special because they overwinter as adult mosquitoes” said Rob Miller, Field Operations Supervisor for the Owens Valley Mosquito Abatement Program. “The warm weather has tricked them into coming out of their hibernation early.” These mosquitoes overwinter as adult mosquitoes take shelter near our homes during winter months. With the first round of the 2024 elections upon us I felt it was time we addressed the real threat to democracy. In the realm of politics, the allure of celebrity endorsements often overshadows the essence of informed democratic participation. As actors and musicians lend their star power to endorse candidates, they inadvertently perpetuate a cycle of passive political engagement among their fan base. While it's tempting to rely on the endorsements of beloved celebrities, this practice undermines the very foundation of democracy. Instead of blindly following the lead of famous figures, citizens should invest time in researching the issues and policies at hand. Understanding the nuances of conflicting statements made by politicians and examining their past impacts on society are crucial steps toward informed decision-making. Celebrity endorsements risk transforming fans into mere followers, akin to zombies in the political arena. Rather than critically analyzing candidates and their...

If the Eastern Sierra Is in its Rainy Season
We Ought to do a Precipitation Conditions Report
The natural rhythm of stories in the Eastern Sierra dictates a piece on the precipitation conditions available on the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s web site. The data confirms what we see, or don’t see on the ground. If we’re dry, how dry are we; if wet, how do we stack up to other wet years. If you’re wondering, we’re dry on a scale of the dismal 2021-22 rain year. This year has been weirdly different. Hurricane Hillary gifted the region with record-breaking and road annihilating rainfall in August. Locals spent a whole weekend hunkered down, waiting to see how much damage would have to be cleaned up. It seemed a lot like winter and our bodies tried to convince our brains it wasn’t August at all. Circadian rhythm is based on a 24-hour period: it gets dark, we should be sleepy. However, the last few months make a good case for a s...
