Owens Valley / Death Valley / Mammoth / Mono County Dennis Mattinson / Eastern Sierra Atmospheric Forecaster Sierra Wave Media / KSRW-FM 92.5 Forecast Discussion - Fri Apr 26 2024 Water vapor imagery yesterday, showed the next trough off the coast, poised to drop into our area today. It will bring scattered rain showers to the Owens Valley and very light, slushy snow to Mammoth (Mammoth Main 1 - 2 inches). Along with that, expect surface winds 30 - 40 mph in wind prone areas. It will also bring a cold air mass, with Friday the coolest day of the week. The system looks to leave the area Saturday, setting up a more zonal flow in Inyo and Mono County. So a warming trend back to the mid 80s in the Owens Valley by Tuesday and Mammoth the low 60s...DMATT Temperatures Today: Bishop: 67 / 35 Big Pine: 66 / 39 Independence: 67 / 42 Lone Pine: 68 / 45 Olancha: 69 / 43 Mammoth Lakes: 40 / 25 Death Valley: 86 / 64 https://sierrawave.net/88623-2/

Last Precipitation Conditions Report  of the Eastern Sierra’s “Rainy Season”    The concept of a “body clock” is fairly understandable. When one’s sleep/wake schedule is interrupted, the mind may grasp the change but the body is still functioning on its own concept of day and night. The deluge from Hurricane Hilary last August, plus a relatively cool early spring, may introduce the idea of a “body calendar” to Eastern Sierra residents, a region with distinct precipitation/no precipitation, hot/cold rhythms.  In other words, how many locals have to check the actual calendar to realize the East Side is about to transition into summer, the historical drop in precipitation and rise in temperatures? Adding to the climatic confusion is the record setting 301-percent of normal 2022-23 rainy season. The 2023-24 “rain season” was close to normal at 98-percent, but the whole concept of “normal” has been seriously skewed.   With the exception of Rock Creek and Sawmill, the East Side’s s...

Mammoth Mountain is living up to its name with a development plan on a 20-acre parcel that would include a new main lodge, an eight-story hotel with 250 rooms, 209 residential units, and 95,000 square feet of commercial space. The tentative plan, presented to the Mono County Board of Supervisors earlier this month, also included an additional 15-acre parcel for wastewater treatment and up to 45 residential units. The Board was assured final decisions would not be made until 2025-26 following opportunities for community input. With multiple owners involved with the land, the United States Forest Service, and a private entity, both the National Environmental Policy Act and California Environmental Quality Act reviews will be required. As of the presentation to the Supervisors, the Town of Mammoth Lakes’ Town Council had not seen a formal presentation of the proposal. Other elements of the plan include a realignment of State Route 203. The State wants the Town to take ownership of the...

CROWLEY LAKE, CA (April 19, 2024) - Water level conditions at Long Valley Reservoir (Crowley Lake) will be above average for this year’s April 27 fish opener. LADWP Aqueduct personnel continue to manage last year’s runoff and plan to release water at the end of this month to accommodate for the expected additional spring runoff. LADWP is working closely with the Crowley Lake Fish Camp to inform the public as much as possible about waterway conditions. We ask the public t...

Old Dinah was in use just after the famous Twenty Mule Team era. Only five wagons sets were constructed and used during the Twenty Mule Team era from 1883 to 1898.
